MATACHANA User Help Tools
Tools to help HPO Low Temperature Sterilizer users
OVERVIEW
About the project
Problem: Large number of breakdowns or incidents during the operation of the Low Temperature HPO sterilizers because a large part of the users do not know how to proceed correctly with this sterilization technology.
Solution: Provide a consultation platform for all users of the HPO MATACHANA Low Temperature Sterilizers and resolve the most frequent doubts that may arise during the different phases of the sterilization process of a load of surgical instruments using low temperature peroxide and plasma sterilization technology.
My role: As a designer, I created user flow, wireframes, high-fidelity UI, an interactive prototype for usability testing and coded the final microsites with all the contents. I also conceptualized, shooted and edited all the video tutorials, illustrate icons and drawings, and animate the motion graphics of the project.
It was a great experience working together with the product manager of the HPO MATACHANA Low Temperature Sterilizer line and creating all the necessary content arising from research and monitoring that we did together with the Spanish hospital community.

RESEARCH
User needs
We started our research in form of surveys and conducting interviews with 8 users from 4 important hospital facilities in Spain that were using these sterilizers to determine what were the main doubts or points of conflict that could be found during the process. After the research and the feedback from clients collected by the product manager, we were able to conclude that a large part of the users had doubts or errors in 5 key actions of the process:
Preparation of the load before introducing it into the sterilizer chamber.
Placing the load inside the sterilization chamber.
Selection of the sterilization cycle according to the type of the load.
Doubts during the check of the control indicators.
Sterilizing solution replacement.
PROJECT CONSTRAINTS
Technical challenges
The best solution would have been to incorporate some information tools within the machine’s own software, but we were limited by the memory that the devices had and updating all the software meant an investment of time and money that the company’s development teams could not assume at that time. For this reason, we decided to introduce only an Information button at the top of the main screen of the sterilizer software to access a QR code that would allow the user to consult all the video tutorials and product help documentation on their mobile or computer.
Solution
Once the limitations and tasks for designing the final solution were defined, we began to generate the content that we would place on the web pages focused on solving the 5 major doubts of our users and that they could consult by scanning the QR code that would appear by clicking on the Info button located in the top navigation bar of the sterilizer. The QR code will vary depending on the phase in which the user is.
Microsites
When I made the microsites for the HPO sterilizers, I also thought about future applications for other brand products. I developed a structure that was easy to repeat for the different devices that MATACHANA manufactures without requiring a great effort for the team to implement it in other sterilizers.
These are the different parts that I considered taking into account the needs of the users and the technical limitations that we could find in future applications.
72% of the users interviewed had admitted that they do not read or do not have time to read all the instructions and specifications of the device.
They would prefer to be able to consult a quick and understandable video for all workers. We decided to add the entire collection of videos in one section beacuse the users could quickly navigate and consult all their doubts during the sterilization process without having to search for the QR of each phase in the sterilizer.
Video tutorials
68% of the breakdowns or incidents reported to the Technical Service occurred due to oversaturated loads or instruments made of materials incompatible with the sterilizer. For this reason, we have designed with the Product Manager quick guides for loading and placing instruments and a tool to check the compatibility of surgical instruments with the sterilization device used.

MATACHANA provides HPO users with access to a compatibility data base with more than 7000 devices.
Other products
82% of CSSDs (Central Sterile Services Department) was unaware of the alternative Low Temperature sterilization products and solutions offered by MATACHANA. For this reason we reserve a section at the end of the microsite to publicize products related to the device they are using, such as the new HPO Monitoring line, another sterilizer that uses an alternative technology to Low Temperature and the different models that exist of the HPO sterilizer.
